FAQ

If you have a question, there's a good chance it's here!

About the Course

Q: What is Mental Health First Aid (MHFA)?

MHFA is an evidence-based training that teaches you how to identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental health or substance use challenges. It's like CPR but for emotional and mental wellbeing. You’ll learn how to offer initial support and connect someone to professional help if the situation calls for it.

Q: Is Mental Health First Aider training the same thing as being trained in First Aid?

Not quite. Traditional First Aid focuses on responding to physical injuries and medical emergencies. Mental Health First Aid teaches you how to recognize and respond to signs of mental health or substance use challenges. Both save lives in their own way. One tends to the body while the other tends to the mind and heart.

Q: Who should take MHFA?

Anyone who interacts with people... so everyone! We welcome anyone who wants to show up better for others. MHFAiders are not expected or allowed to diagnose or make medication recommendations. Anyone can be a Mental Health First Aider!

Q: Why Lighthouse MHFA?

We believe learning should feel safe, human, and empowering. At Lighthouse, we believe community mental wellbeing is a group effort and requires shared responsibility. Our supportive environment is designed to build confidence and compassion without pressure or the monotony of one-way lectures.

Before You Register

Q: How do I know if MHFA is the right course for me?

If you’ve ever wished you knew what to say or do when someone was struggling with their mental health, MHFA is for you! You’ll leave with a clear, step-by-step action plan and practical tools to use right away.

Q: How long is the class?

Each class runs about 8 hours long, including a 1-hour lunch and two 15-minute breaks.

Q: Do I need any background in mental health?

Not at all. MHFA is designed for everyone! No prior experience required. Much like CPR and BLS training are available for anybody to enroll in, MHFA teaches skills we all can benefit from.

Q: Will I get a certification?

Yes! Upon completion of the course, you will receive a Mental Health First Aider certificate valid for 3 years, recognized nationwide.

During the Course

Q: What should I expect during class?
You’ll engage in guided discussions, watch short videos, learn practical tools, and work through realistic situations in a group with others. We aim for our classes to be welcoming, trauma-informed, and interactive.

Q: Is participation required?
Participation is highly encouraged, but you are absolutely welcome to engage at your own comfort level. Introversion is real, and we understand that not everybody is comfortable being on camera. We just ask that you're attentive, open to learning, and supportive of other group members!

Q: What if I feel uncomfortable or overwhelmed?
Please let us know. If you're feeling overwhelmed at any time during class, please send a private message on Zoom to your instructor. MHFA instructors understand that some topics and scenarios can be emotionally activating, and we are always here to help. We can provide a short break, grounding exercises, resources, or anything else that might be able to help. You’re never alone here!

After the Course

Q: What happens after I finish MHFA training?
You’ll be officially certified as a Mental Health First Aider! You'll be equipped to recognize signs of mental health challenges and respond with confidence and care. You’ll gain access to your certificate, the Adult MHFA manual, and follow-up resources via the Connect portal to keep your skills sharp.

Q: Can I use my certification professionally?
Yes! Many workplaces recognize MHFA certification as a valuable professional development credential, especially in healthcare, education, human resources, and community work.

Our hope is that as more people earn their certification, every workplace and community will have someone who knows how to offer MHFA support when it matters most.

Q: Can I retake or refresh my MHFA skills later?
Absolutely. Refresher trainings are available to renew your certification and continue your growth as a mental health advocate. Learn more here.
